Talbinah vs oatmeal: what is the difference?

Talbinah and oatmeal look alike: both are a warm grain porridge. Still, there are clear differences. Which one suits you?

The grain

Talbinah is made from barley flour: ground barley grains, as fine as flour. Oatmeal consists of rolled oat grains in flakes.

Texture and taste

  • Talbinah: smooth, silky and creamy, with a mild, slightly nutty taste.
  • Oatmeal: coarser, with more bite from the flakes.

Preparation time

Both are quick. Talbinah simmers for 5 to 7 minutes, oatmeal for 3 to 5 minutes. Oats can also be soaked cold as overnight oats. Talbinah can be cooled into a cold pudding.

Nutritional value

Nutritional values differ per brand. Oats naturally contain more fibre than our barley flour. Always compare labels if this is important to you. You can find our nutritional values on the product page.

Gluten

Barley contains gluten, so talbinah is not suitable for people with a gluten allergy or coeliac disease. Oats themselves do not contain gluten, but regular oatmeal is often contaminated with wheat. If you have a gluten allergy, choose certified gluten-free oats.

The big difference: the Sunnah

Talbinah is mentioned in the narrations. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said talbina soothes the heart of the sick and takes away some of the grief (Bukhari & Muslim). With a bowl of talbinah you also follow a Sunnah.

Conclusion

Looking for a creamy, smooth porridge with religious meaning? Choose talbinah. Want more bite or a gluten-free option? Choose oatmeal. Or alternate! Try our Talbinah.
